In the United States, 30th March is celebrated as National Doctor's Day. In historical terms, on 30th March 1933 wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, Eudora Brown Almond, set aside a date to honor the contributions of physicians; on that day people mailed greeting cards and placed flowers upon the graves of deceased doctors, and that is how the tradition started.
From the discoveries of vaccines to painlessly excising tumors using anesthesia in the early years, we have come a long way to modern medicine, technological developments in medical research, and treatments to cure various diseases. We still have a long way to go to treat complex diseases and discover cures to cancer, other complex and rare diseases; however, at present, with the help of vast knowledge constructed by contributions made by innumerable doctors, physicians, practice providers, surgeons, researchers who always put their patients first, we certainly are improving the global health.
On a personal level, my inspiration to become a doctor is the result of my desire to cure cancer and other devastating diseases. I remember my days as a clinician when I didn't have any other tools to cure patients, that's when I realized why medical research was important and how my contribution could help save millions of lives.
On this National Doctor's Day, 30th March 2022, let's come together to celebrate Doctors for their service to society and global health!
